Scott Peterson and the Bloodthirst of America
Did you watch the Scott Peterson verdict on TV? I did. I saw the masses, crowded outside the courtroom like groupies at a rock concert, waiting to hear the resolution of the drama they've been following like it was their favorite daytime soap opera. When the verdict was announced, they went nuts. People danced. People laughed. People talked on cell phones, grinning ear-to-ear. They were celebrating like it was their favorite holiday. Celebrating like their favorite sports team had won a championship. Celebrating like...an ordinary man, just like you and me, had killed his wife and child, and has now been condemned to death or life behind bars because of his crimes. Celebrating? Why weren't they weeping? Why weren't they paying silent tribute to the woman and child that lost their lives? Why weren't they doing ANYTHING but celebrating like it was Mardi Gras? The thirst for blood and the morbid desire to see a man sentanced to death shows me just how far we've fallen.

As did I. But keep in mind, there probably were silent tributes going on. But good TV is not silent. It's some looney screaming and clapping.
Don't blame the people outside, blame the producer. The camera loves a fool and hates the stoic.

It may be the producer showing those clips, but the clips aren't false.
It is difficult for me to imagine desiring someone to die, killer or otherwise....
For a while, I thought I might be the only one repulsed by the celebratory attitudes. Thank you for proving me wrong.
Yeah. It was really disgusting to see all those people as if it were the best thing that ever happened to television.
I couldn't be more sick to my stomach. :-/
